A Parade of over 300 lanterns created by the community

Join us to celebrate the River Gade (rare chalk stream unique to Hertfordshire) enjoy floating lanterns and a series of lit installations at the point where the river flows through Hemel Town Centre.

What to expect on the day.

Our artistic team are busy building the giant sculptures to create a beautiful lantern-lit backdrop for the Rainbow Stage in the Town Centre and a series of watery sculptures for the banks of the River Gade at Riverside.

The biggest spectacle of the day will, of course, be the throng of lanterns created in workshops and creative sessions taking place across Hemel. The parade is marching from the Rainbow Stage to Riverside (where the River flows through the Town Centre) accompanied by the sound of beating drums.

More about the Project

Celebrating the beauty of place – a creative response to the stories and landscape of Hemel

Using ancient willow and tissue paper techniques, lanterns are being created across the community with over 100 lanterns already made and only 300 to go!!

The River of Light celebrates the beauty of place through a creative response to the stories and landscape of Hemel. Pyramid-shaped lanterns represent the Chiltern Hills, a willow model village, created in school workshops, is inspired by our built environment and set to the backdrop of the flora and fauna of the hillsides, created by the Home Ed Hangout CIC

Welcoming the light and the renewal of spring after the dark winter months, this visual spectacle is created with, and for the people of Hemel, generously supported by Dacorum Borough Council in partnership with Puddingstone Arts Wild Wisdom Calling, Fishery Wharf Cafe, Warners End Home Ed Hangout CIC, Hemel Library, DENS, No Ordinary Museum, Liberty Tea Rooms, Riverside, Roman Fields School, George Street Primary School, Chambersbury Infants,  and  Hemel Bid.

All workshops are now Sold Out. Make a Lantern as a Family and join the parade – Lantern Kits are available to buy from Liberty Tea Rooms https://www.libertytearooms.co.uk
